Party Edit: Chokers

Light up the night with T.ba’s timeless accessories. Delve into the history of the choker.

Lately, we have seen the return of the choker necklaces. The neck-tight choker had a real boom in the 90s, and now it has come back to give us a little touch of grunge. Let us tell you a little bit more about the history of this styling essential.

The Origin of Chokers

As mentioned, the chokers peaked in the 90s, but they were born long before. In fact, its origin is almost 300 years old. In the 18th century, many French women began to wear red ribbons tied around their neck in respect of the people who were beheaded in the guillotine.

Several years later, in the century XIX, chokers became popular among rich women, as a key accessory in their styles (surely you’ve seen old pictures of women carrying them).

Then again, in the 1940s, chokers became fashionable among the girls of high society. A few decades later, they returned to adorn the necks of rock stars. And today, and after a flirt with fashion in 2016, choker necklaces return to our closets.

How to Wear It?

Throughout history, we have seen them in all shapes and colours: in leather, with studs, in velvet, tattoo style… Now, they have a romantic accent and some a dramatic baroque style. Velvet or lace and with dark tones are fashionable and chic. They are, as always, adjusted to the neck – alone – or accompanied with a striking charm such as a cross.

Simple Chokers

At T.ba, we propose a very simple black velvet design to combine with elegant looks. We love the idea for our Christmas outfits, with a romantic shirt and a velvet jacket – or suit. Without a doubt, it is a different option from the very common sequins. In addition, it also looks great with jeans, a white blouse and a blazer for a more casual plan.

More Ornate Designs

And for those who believe that “more is more”, there are also ways. T.ba has another velvet model with a striking charm to fix all the attention on the neckline. The best is that you can play with it and add more chokers or long necklaces too.

Which of the alternatives do you prefer? Are you going to join the historic trend of chokers this season? We encourage you to do so, and to come by the shops of T.ba to find the one of your choice.
